What heat does to a body
Your body works hard to stay near 37 degrees. Sweating is the main tool, and in humid air like coastal Lagos, sweat stops working well because it cannot evaporate. That is why humid heat is more dangerous than dry heat at the same temperature.
Long before heat stroke, heat quietly degrades you. Concentration drops. Sleep gets worse. Tempers shorten. Studies across many countries find students score lower on exams taken in extreme heat. The damage is real even when nobody collapses.
The classroom problem
Now put 60 students under a zinc roof with no fan, in a heatwave. Zinc turns a classroom into an oven by early afternoon. Attendance drops on the hottest days, and the students who stay learn less.
Heatwaves in Nigeria are getting longer and more frequent. In early 2024, NiMet issued repeated heat warnings, with heat stress readings in parts of the country passing 40 degrees. Education is being taxed by heat, and nobody sends a receipt.
Who can escape it
Heat is priced. Air conditioning, a generator to run it, a car instead of a danfo, an office instead of a market stall. Money buys distance from heat, and the people with the least money do the most outdoor work.
So heat is a justice issue, exactly like flooding. The Lagos trader in an open-air market and the student under a zinc roof did the least to cause the warming. They pay the highest daily price for it.
